Theme/Purpose

In an era where media is extremely impactful on people’s perspectives of themselves, others, and the world around them, we wanted to create a product that could provide insight on information people are reading.

Product

Apate, in Greek mythology, was the goddess of deceit. We were inspired to use the name of a god or goddess from mythology and after deliberation chose the name Apate to be our product name.

Fake news is any inaccurate or misleading information, allowing a population to make false claims under the assumption that it is fact. Over the past few years, fake news has become more and more prevalent. We hoped to create an automated way of “fact-checking” based off of machine learning algorithms and statistical analysis.

Our fake news extension classifies the content at a URL as fake or factual, and a percentage range is also displayed to estimate how much of the article is factual. Our target audience is people who use media as their primary source of information.

Our extension can be accessed on the chrome store, here; or through our open source code, here.
